Pleaching: The art of training trees

The use of pleached trees to establish the architecture of a garden is one of the defining aspects of 17th and 18th-century design, particularly in France and Italy. Traditionally used to demarcate grand allées or to enclose intimate spaces, pleached trees had, until recently, fallen out of widespread use. Now, following their appearance in Chelsea Flower Show gardens, often in the form of “hedges on stilts,” enthusiasm for pleached trees is filtering across the country. Related forms of manipulation are also popular – tree “ceilings” and tunnels, for example, can be seen for sale in large garden centres.

Six Board Blanket Chest

Matt and I are just getting ready to unload our bounty of Eastern White Pine.  Here we each have chose a couple hundred board feet of boards.  We even had some extra to sell to a couple colleagues.

 

I along with several of my fellow colleagues we had a rare opportunity to purchase some local Eastern White Pine from one of the Homebuilding editors this summer.  He had a neighbor who wanted to cut down a few very large trees adjacent to his property.  Ceasing on this he arranged to have the large trees cut down and sawn up for lumber at a mill in northern Connecticut.  Then to defer the costs he was willing to sell the boards at a very reasonable price.
