With newspapers constantly reporting on the economic consequences of the current recession, it was refreshing to read in The Wall Street Journal, of all places, Bart Ziegler reporting on creating great looking patio planters,

For years Ive tried to emulate the lush, overstuffed flower containers that are a staple of home magazines and TV design shows. You know, those pots displayed on decks and patios with flawless plants spilling over the sides, no bloom or leaf out of place.

Plums galore, as the summer bears fruit

Then another friend arrived with an even heavier bag of the same mottle-skinned variety, part of a haul that had in turn been passed on to her by a similarly overwhelmed grower.

Swift action was called for. After collecting windfalls from our own tree of prematurely ripening apples, and a quick trip to the shops for a few kilos of preserving sugar, my wife converted nature’s bounty – or at least part of it – into several jars of delicious plum and apple jam.
