Choosing the right bed for a Toddler

The transition of moving from a cot to a bed is a big step in a toddler’s life. I have the faintest memory of my first bed, and how grown up I felt when in it. But when is a good time to make this change and what kind of bed is best?

Every toddler is different; therefore the time when they should move into a bed is different for every individual. As a guide a good time to move them into a bed is when they start to show signs of independence, i.e. they have figured out how to climb out of their cot. Safety is paramount, therefore when this starts to occur you need a lower to the ground bed to avoid accidents.

You have three options when choosing a bed for this next stage, a cot-bed, a single Childrens Bed or a toddlers bed.

The cot-bed is fantastic for this transition period. They are cots that can then have their sides removed resulting in a bed. Some makes also have expandable underneath to give extra length as your child grows. These are definitely the money saving option, and also prevent the toddler feeling insecure, as it is still their cot, but just without the sides. However some believe a complete change at this stage is advisable.

AS said before you can choose form the Toddler bed or a standard Child’s bed. The toddler bed has the added advantage of being lower to the floor, therefore making it safer if the child does roll or fall out of bed. A child’s bed will last you longer as you can keep it for years as your child grows into it. However it would be advisable to attach a rail on the side to prevent falling out of the bed. It also provides a climbing device for the toddler to get itself out of bed if need be.

So choose wisely, consider safety and make it exciting for the child. It is a big deal moving into a bed, so celebrate this. The more exciting it is for the child the less daunting and scary it will become.
